Starting plants from seeds is a great way for home gardeners to save money and have more control over the varieties they grow. Here are some basic steps for seed starting:
Choose your seeds: Decide which plants you want to grow and choose seeds that are suited for your growing zone and the season you want to plant.
Gather supplies: You'll need containers for planting, seed-starting mix, labels, and a water source.
Fill containers: Fill containers with seed-starting mix and moisten with water. Make sure the mix is not too wet
Plant seeds: Follow the seed packet instructions for planting depth and spacing. Place seeds in the container and cover with more seed-starting mix.
Label: Label the containers with the plant variety and date of planting. This will help you keep track of what you've planted and when.
Provide light: Place the containers in a sunny location or under grow lights. Seeds need 12-16 hours of light per day to germinate.
Water: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water from the bottom by placing the container in a tray of water and letting the soil soak up the moisture.
Transplant: Once the seedlings have grown their first true leaves, they are ready to be transplanted into larger containers or directly into the garden.
By following these basic steps, home gardeners can successfully start their own plants from seeds and enjoy a bountiful harvest.
